We are five students at the University of Maryland College Park who are passionate about raising the minimum wage in the United States. Currently, the federal minimum wage is $7.25, which is much lower than it expectedly should be. In a study done by Pew Research, with inflation rates, cost of living, and the current richness of America taken into account, the minimum wage should be around $12 an hour. Knowing information like this baffles us; Why is the minimum wage $5 less than it should be? This is what drives us to do what we do, fight for the little guys who are just trying to survive.
Opposers think raising the minimum wage only benefits teenagers who work part time, which is completely untrue. According to the Economic Policy Institute 89% of people working for minimum wage are over the age of 20.
